Frequently Asked Questions

Is it a good time to go green and invest in solar panels?

Yes it is. Solar power is a simple and effective way of future-proofing all types of homes and businesses against the rising price of electricity.

The cost of solar panels has fallen considerably in recent years making it a more affordable option for many.

What kind of returns can I expect on my investment?

Many users of solar panels have been pleasantly surprised by the returns on their investment. In many cases returns above 12% and in some cases around 15% are being regularly achieved.

Put another way, this is like having your electricity bills slashed in half.

What if I want to install solar panels but don’t have the money up front to pay for them?

The Government’s new Green Deal programme may be the answer.

How long does it take to install a solar panel scheme?

In many cases, especially domestic installations, it is no more that 1 or 2 days.

With bigger schemes for commercial or agricultural clients, it may extend to 3 days.

One of the first steps prior to installation is to check on any planning requirements and to liaise with the National Grid in order to draw up a realistic timescale for connection

What does the term Green Deal mean?

This is the name of a plan introduced by the Government to deliver home improvements and save homeowners money on their energy bills.

Through the Green Deal, homeowners will be able to have their homes assessed to see if there is scope to make energy savings. Any cost-savings are calculated and it is these savings over a pre-determined time that are used to fund the improvements and repay the Green Deal provider.

A householder should see no overall increase in their outgoings, but they will be living in a warmer, greener home. Properties need to be assessed by Green Deal specialists and any recommended work is carried out through approved contractors. Improvements to homes through the Green Deal will range from draught proofing and double glazing to installing new ways of generating power such as micro wind turbines and solar panels.

In some areas the local authorities are taking the initiative and establishing a Green Deal provider for their area who will act as a hub for enquiries and assessments whilst co-ordinating the work of approved contractors.
